Statistical mechanics derives macroscopic laws from the microscopic laws of physics. In view of the spectacular advances and the great technological promises in bio- and nano-technology,  a new sub-field has emerged,  focusing on the statistical properties of small scale non-equilibrium physics. Promising new results in this context include the derivation of exact statistical quantities,  such as the work and fluctuation theorems, a novel assessment of the role of stochasticity,  nonlinearity and chaos and their possible constructive role for the function and operation of small-scale systems,  and the development of stochastic thermodynamics for small non-equilibrium systems. The statistical physics communities of both India and Belgium are actively involved in these developments. The purpose of the Symposium is to bring together leading scientists from both countries to discuss recent advances,  promote existing collaboration,  and foster new ties.
